BMVs Remain a Concern During Rodeo Season

After kicking off Thursday, February 24, the rodeo is officially back in Houston! With an expected 2 million visitors ready to put their boots back on after a hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it is important to remain vigilant as the large crowds are associated with a rise in criminal activity in the area.

Criminal activity including burglary of motor vehicles, thefts and simple assaults typically occur in the many parking lots and street parking surrounding and serving the HLSR.

Burglaries of Motor Vehicles (BMVs) have been occurring more frequently during the pandemic and have had an added bump since the start of rodeo season in the area surrounding the NRG complex. Suspects have broken the windows of parked vehicles both on the street and in crowded parking lots to steal property. There have been approximately 20 BMVs reported in the area since last Thursday when the Rodeo Cook Off took place, according to statistics from the Houston Police Department.

UT Police at Houston asks the community to remain vigilant in reporting any suspicious activity and to participate in your safety, on or off campus. If you see any suspicious persons or vehicles, contact UT Police at (713) 792-2890.

Participate in Your Safety

  • Do not leave valuables such as wallets, purses, cell phones, tablets, medications, or gift cards in plain view.
  • Avoid stowing valuables or shopping bags in the trunk after you park. Instead, stow them before leaving your prior location.
  • Keep your vehicle locked, park in well-lit areas and do not leave your vehicle running unattended. Criminals often target vehicles parked in dark and isolated areas.
  • Be aware of your surroundings and the people around you -- especially if you are alone or it is dark. Avoid walking or running alone at night.
  • Always walk in well-lit areas and avoid the use of shortcuts or areas with minimal foot-traffic.
  • Trust your instincts. If you feel uncomfortable in a place or situation, leave right away.
