At UT Police at Houston, a start as a public safety officer (PSO) can be a first step toward a career in law enforcement.

Becoming a sworn police officer starts with a demanding selection process. Precious Flowers, who began as a PSO in 2024 and became a police cadet earlier this year, is now serving our community as a police officer.

“My decision to pursue a career in law enforcement stems from an understanding of the challenges facing modern policing,” Flowers said. “For me, wearing the badge isn’t about authority; it’s about a deep commitment to public service at a time when it’s needed most.”

Flowers is one of the newest UT Police cadets who have graduated from the Houston City College police academy. Since 2025, three others have taken the same path to successfully complete their academy journey.

Flowers believes that effective policing begins with trust and understanding.

“I chose this path because I want to be part of the solution,” she said. “I want to help rebuild the bridge between law enforcement and the communities we serve. I want to bring empathy back to the forefront of policing by showing up with compassion, not judgment.”

Her perspective reflects the qualities seeks to develop through its career advancement opportunities: professionalism, integrity, and a commitment to community service.

Joseph Giron followed a similar path when he first joined UT Police in 2023. While law enforcement was not part of his original career plans, he found purpose in serving others and credits his faith, family, and support system for encouraging him along the way.

“As for inspiration, God and my family. That was the driving force for me to go on this path,” said Giron. “For the people who have encouraged, helped, and provided support, they too are part of that inspiration.”

Now serving as a police officer after graduating from the UT System Police Academy in 2024, Giron says the lessons he learned during his officer training continue to influence how he approaches the profession.

“Human nature is unpredictable, but sometimes a little compassion can de-escalate the most volatile situation,” he said.

Flowers and Giron join a long list of UT Police officers who began as civilian security personnel. Their journeys, training and professional development, strengthen UT Police’s ability to foster a safe and welcoming campus.

The advancement of these officers demonstrates individual achievement and reflects UT Police’s commitment to developing talent from within and creating career opportunities for team members dedicated to public service and with the fortitude to serve.
