July 02, 2026
The 14th Annual Promotions and Awards Ceremony recognized outstanding members across the division, celebrating excellence, leadership and service through its “Of The Year” recipients.
Concluding this series celebrating excellence, the final group of “Of The Year” recipients highlights individuals whose dedication, leadership and service continue to make a lasting impact across the division. These honorees mark the culmination of a month-long spotlight.
A Strong Start Guided by Purpose and Determination

Rookie Officer of the Year Alex Aguinaga was honored for an exceptional first year, with recognition from his supervisor, Sgt. Bethaney Covington.
“Officer Aguinaga has had an outstanding rookie year as an evening shift police officer,” Covington said. “His professionalism and performance have gone above and beyond the standard.”
Aguinaga, she said, has demonstrated a commitment to continuous learning by proactively taking advanced training opportunities.
Reflecting on his success and the award, Aguinaga encouraged others launching their career in law enforcement to stay focused on their purpose.
“I believe that for someone who is beginning their career, they should always remember their ‘why’,” Aguinaga said. His own personal ‘why’ keeps him grounded and focused.
The award carries personal significance, he said, and is a reflection of his work ethic.
“Winning the award means that the hard-working attitude instilled in me by my family has been fruitful, and that I can set an example for my children to follow as well,” he said.
Excellence Through Dedication and Growth

Police Officer of the Year Jesse Hernandez was recognized for his leadership, professionalism and lasting impact on the division by his former supervisor, Sgt. Alondra Jones.
Hernandez’s efforts have consistently stood out and, Jones said, he is well deserving of the honor.
“Officer Jesse Hernandez embodies the highest standards of professionalism, dedication and service,” Jones said. “His work ethic, leadership, investigative skill, and unwavering commitment to excellence have had a profound and lasting impact on the division and the institution.”
One of the greatest accomplishments in his career thus far, Hernandez said, has been becoming a certified Instructor through the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement. The certification has allowed him to pursue advanced training, expand his knowledge, and share improved methods that enhance effectiveness and safety for both officers and the community.
The award reflects UT Police’s commitment to service and recognizes those who embody that core value every day.
“Receiving the Officer of the Year Award is a tremendous honor and a meaningful acknowledgment of the dedication and hard work that often goes unrecognized,” he said, reflecting on prior recipients.
He described the recognition as refreshing and motivating, not only personally but also for the officers he works alongside who dedicate their efforts to serving with utmost professionalism.
