UT Police Launch South Campus Traffic Safety Initiative in March
March 02, 2026
Beginning March 1, UT Police Uniformed Police Operations will implement the South Campus Traffic Initiative, a focused traffic safety effort that will run through March 31. This initiative is designed to address ongoing traffic safety concerns in and around the South Campus area serving the MD Anderson and UTHealth Houston communities.
Throughout the month, officers will conduct high-visibility patrols and targeted enforcement during peak traffic hours. The primary areas of focus will include:
- Failure to yield to pedestrians
- Stop sign and red-light violations
- Improper turns
- Blocking intersections
- Fire lane violations
- Other hazardous moving violations that contribute to crashes and pedestrian safety risks
The goal of this initiative is to reduce collisions, improve pedestrian safety, and enhance overall roadway compliance in high-traffic areas across the South Campus.
“The South Campus Traffic Initiative is about more than issuing citations-it’s about creating a safer environment for everyone who studies, works, receives care, or visits our campus,” said Captain Justin Taylor. “By increasing visibility and reinforcing safe driving behaviors, our goal is to reduce preventable crashes and promote lasting habits that protect pedestrians and drivers alike.”
In addition to enforcement, officers will engage in educational outreach when appropriate to promote safe driving behaviors and encourage voluntary compliance among faculty, staff, students, patients, and visitors. This balanced approach reflects UT Police’s commitment to community-oriented policing and long-term safety improvements.
Community members should also anticipate increased traffic congestion associated with the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, which may further impact traffic patterns in and around the South Campus during the initiative period.
UT Police encourage everyone to remain attentive, follow posted traffic laws, and prioritize pedestrian safety while traveling throughout campus.
