UT Police Hosts National Night Out Building Bonds and Safer Communities

UT Police celebrated National Night Out on Tuesday, October 7, at UTHealth Houston’s University Housing, bringing together residents, students, and community partners for an evening of connection, safety education, and fun.

National Night Out is an annual community-building campaign that promotes police-community partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie to make communities safer, more caring places to live.

This year’s event featured interactive displays, safety demonstrations, and activities for all ages. The University Housing staff provided snacks and water for guests, while UT Police handed out hand fans, branded sling bags, and coloring books. Attendees enjoyed a safety presentation by Officer Leston and had opportunities to meet and chat with Chief William Adcox and Assistant Chief Matt Slinkard, who handed out police badge stickers to children.

“National Night Out is a wonderful event,” said Chief Adcox. “UT Police is proud of the great relationship we have with the community we serve.”

Community partners joined in the fun, including UTHealth Houston Environmental Health and Safety (EHS), MD Anderson Cancer Prevention, and the Houston Fire Department (HFD). HFD brought a fire truck for attendees to explore before being called away on duty. EHS also brought a digital fire extinguisher simulator, allowing adults and children to safely practice the PASS (Pull-Aim-Squeeze-Sweep) technique.

UT Police showcased several vehicles, including a patrol car with Officers Shamira Pitts and Terri Johnson. Guests were able to look inside the vehicle, press buttons, and take photos. Sergeant Scott Barnwell and Officer Henry Hill displayed the division’s armored vehicle and one of the two High Water Evacuation (HWE) vehicles.

Children and families also enjoyed hands-on activities with UT Police team members. Public Safety Officer Obioma Ogu and Asset Technician Lamar Pitre handed out safety-themed coloring books and stickers. Nearby, Senior Public Safety Officer Alyssa Tinoco and Public Safety Officer Joseph Keenan ran a popular prize drop game, keeping both adults and children entertained throughout the evening.

“The event was a success,” said Sherneka Cagle, Senior Community Relations Specialist, who organized the gathering. “Everyone enjoyed themselves and walked away with a stronger relationship with UT Police, which is exactly what National Night Out is all about.”

A similar event for the Bastrop campus will take place later this year.
