UT Police urge public safety awareness ahead of World Cup matches

As Houston prepares to host seven FIFA World Cup matches this summer, UT Police is urging residents and visitors to take extra precautions amid large crowds and increased traffic around NRG Stadium and across the city.

An estimated 500,000 visitors are expected to travel to Houston between June 14 and July 4 for the seven matches scheduled at NRG Stadium. The scale of the events require extensive planning and coordination by area agencies to address the added safety challenges that come with large crowds and increased activity, and UT Police is ensuring we’re well prepared.

“Increased pedestrian activity is expected in and around World Cup venues,” Police Captain Justin Taylor said. “Drivers should watch closely for foot traffic, and pedestrians are urged to use crosswalks and follow traffic signals.”

There could be an increase in scooter traffic as well in the medical center, so safety awareness is important.

He also encouraged the public to allow extra travel time, be patient on the roads and follow posted detours.

How to protect yourself and your property

Residents and visitors are reminded to lock doors and windows before leaving home, park in well-lit areas when possible, and avoid leaving valuables, including bags, electronics or firearms inside vehicles.

“If you see something suspicious, report it,” Taylor said. “And avoid sharing travel plans on social media, which can unintentionally make you a target.”

UT Police will increase patrols during the World Cup events and is working closely with regional partners to support public safety.

“Law enforcement agencies across the region will be collaborating throughout the event to ensure a safe environment for both residents and visitors,” said Police Captain Michael Redmond, who oversees the division’s police presence for special events as well as emergency preparedness.

Preparation efforts are underway behind the scenes

Redmond recently participated in a tabletop exercise alongside university, city, county, state and federal partners to prepare for the World Cup. The exercise focused on coordination and response planning for the event, reinforcing communication protocols and interagency collaboration ahead of the summer matches.

Trophy Tour in TMC

Safety planning also extends beyond game days. Ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the iconic World Cup trophy will make a stop in Houston as part of FIFA’s global trophy tour.

The trophy is scheduled to be on display May 2 and 3 at Helix Park, located at 1885 Old Spanish Trail in the Texas Medical Center. Organizers expect between 5,000 and 10,000 attendees per day.

UT Police is advising those attending the trophy tour stop to plan ahead, expect crowds, and follow guidance from organizers and law enforcement officers.

“This is an exciting moment for our city,” Redmond said. “With a little awareness and preparation, we can all enjoy the event safely and help show visitors the best of Houston.”
