Behind the Badge: The Property & Evidence Team Powering UT Police
February 03, 2026
Before a new officer receives their first uniform, before a patrol car hits the road, and before equipment ever reaches the field, it passes through one team: Property & Evidence. Their behind-the-scenes work ensures every section of UT Police is prepared to serve the community.
From issuing properly fitted uniforms and duty gear to managing weapons, ammunition, and critical equipment, the Property & Evidence team plays a vital role in daily operations at UT Police. In addition, the team manages the division’s entire vehicle fleet, coordinating maintenance and repairs, and ensuring all vehicles are operational and ready for service. Their work ensures that every officer is prepared, compliant with regulations, and supported from their first day on the job through every stage of their career. This attention to detail directly impacts officer safety and operational effectiveness in the field.
As law enforcement standards evolve and the division continues to grow, adaptability has become a cornerstone of the team’s work.
“Law enforcement equipment and standards are constantly evolving, so our team has to stay ahead of that curve,” said Abel Santillan, Property & Evidence Manager. “We’re always evaluating new equipment, updating policies, and researching emerging technology to make sure that the equipment we issue our team meets standards and supports officer safety.”
Managing growth adds another layer of complexity. As the UT Police team grows, the Property & Evidence team ensures consistency, accountability, and readiness across the , whether that involves equipping new personnel or keeping an expanding fleet mission ready.
Technology also plays a critical role in how the team operates. From inventory tracking to lifecycle management of equipment, modern tools help ensure transparency, accountability, and operational efficiency.
In addition, the Property & Evidence team works closely with leadership, training staff, and vendors to anticipate divisional needs, adapt to evolving standards, and support special assignments or events. Whether onboarding new officers, outfitting specialized units, or ensuring vehicles are ready for patrol, the team operates with precision and purpose.
While their work often happens behind the scenes, its impact is felt every day, on patrol, at special events, and throughout the communities UT Police serve. Their commitment ensures that police and security team members can focus on what matters most: protecting life, property, and the mission of the institutions we serve.
